Back + Forth

Grow in grace

I keep saying this, but how is it the end of the year already? It just whizzed by, didn’t it?  I want to take a quick post to look back before heading headlong into 2014, and all the adventures and challenges it will bring.

It feels like just a few weeks since I posted about my word for the year. And man, wasn’t Susannah Conway right about the power of words. This year really was one of incredible growth for me. New job, fresh challenges, tons of learning experiences and lots and lots of growth. As well as getting to work with a whole new team, including a genuinely amazing, inspiring and supportive editor and insanely talented art director, I also got to dip a very terrified toe into the world of freelance. I was simply blown away by the opportunities I got this year – shooting for Bash and Image, writing for the Irish Independentkeeping up my precious page of geekery and gadgets in KISS, and mixing both photography and writing on U Magazine, to name but a few.

But of course, not every goal gets fulfilled. I thought when I went semi-freelance that I would have more time to dedicate to this space, more time to help it grow. And though there was a little of that – a collaboration with Alpro pulled me out of my comfort zone, and got me blogging about different things – for the most part the blog fell down the list, as paying gigs took priority. I went all Bills, Bills, Bills on my blog. Like many a rookie freelancer, I freaked out about not making ends meet an took a gazillion and one things. In ways, it was the making of me – it stretched me, made me (that word again) grow and learn at a dizzying pace, introduced me to some wonderful people, and inspired me to improve. But this space, where my passions and ideas can run riot, this space suffered. I want less of that in 2014.

But that was looking back, and I’m so excited to look forward. I’ve been working with somebody pretty special on giving this space a bit of a revamp, so though it may be quiet for a few weeks while that gets finished, I have lots of juicy plans for the year ahead. There’s a new career development brewing that makes me feel a bit like this (but way less smooth and a hella more scared) and, on the home front, B and I are plotting travels and new nests.

Thank you to anyone who commented, tweeted, or liked in 2013; it brightens my day  to see someone interact with this space and really means so much. Happy New Year, and looking forward to seeing you in 2014!
