Links for magazine lovers

I love magazines: working on them, reading them, learning about how they’re made. Whether they’re chunky glossies or hip, heavy stock indies, I have stacks and stacks around the house (something Ben is very sound about). I’m working on a post of my favourite mag storage ideas, but in the meantime, here are some lovely magazine-related links, for any fellow mag nerds out there…

Above: “What I want are stories that are stories in their own right that also speak to a powerful, feminine idea”: I just backed Mary on Kickstarter, a new magazine written and edited exclusively by women, but for everyone.

Nice interview with Bethany Powell, director of mobile design at National Geographic.

Speaking of Nat Geo, they’re one of a few titles (along with Cosmopolitan, People, and The Daily Mail) using Snapchat’s new Discover feature to reach out to new readers.

A hand-finished magazine cover? Elle Brazil did it

I’m hooked on scrolling through the Gym Class Instagram feed of gorgeous covers

My mag nerd brain loved reading this piece on how the Bon Apetit team create their recipes

Dot, a magazine for under fives, has just launched. And it’s gorgeous.

I’m about to sign up for a Stack subscription – a different beautiful indie mag delivered to your door every month. Nice.

And finally, a few of other indie mags worth checking out:

  • Guts: A bi-monthly Irish mag filled with confessional writing and gorgeous illustrations.
  • Riposte: All about inspiring women from around the world.
  • MacGuff: Each issue of this Dutch mag explores a different everyday object.
  • ChickpeaBeautiful food mag, that also happens to be 100% vegan.

Top: Very clever magazine and book display boxes by Boox.
